Carmen was founded in 1850 by Christian Lanz, who named the winery in honour of his beloved wife Carmen. More than a century later, in 1987, the Claro Group acquired the brand to take it into a new direction. In 1992 a new winery was built and new vineyards were planted, to produce the best quality wines from Chile, and export them worldwide. Carmen has been recognized for its quality and for being a pioneer in the Chilean wine industry. As an example, the Carmenère grape was discovered amongst Carmen vineyards in Alto Maipo after having been lost for many years in France. Today Carmenère is one of Chile's emblematic varieties. On the other hand, Carmen Gold, the company´s icon wine, was one of Chile´s first internationally recognized ultra premium wines. The vineyards are ideally placed for the best combination of climate, soil and terroir to suit each varietal. All this, combined with a talented team of winemakers dedicated to quality and their craft, allows Carmen to maintain its position as a leading premium brand in the international market. Today, Viña Carmen is one of the most important Chilean wineries in the premium wine segment and it exports to more than 50 countries.
